Procedures inform the students what is expected of them for the classroom to run smoothly. Procedures also reduce disruptions, discipline problems, and keep the students on task.
Classroom helpers are key in helping to manage the classroom. These interchangeable student jobs help the classroom run smoothly, help the students to know what they are supposed to be doing, and help the teacher keep things in order. My classroom helpers would be as follows:
Line Leader - will lead the line and run errands for the teacher
Door Holder - will hold the door and run errands for the teacher
Safety Captain - takes care of the safety book and carried first aid kit
Caboose
3 to 4 table captains - passes out and takes up paper to be turned in
3 to 4 table monitors - makes sure everybody is quiet when told to me quiet and makes sure the area around the table is clean
Librarian - makes sure the book are in the correct spots and is in charge of making sure the library cards are all there
Sharpener - sharpens pencils during designated times
Teacher helper - if the teacher need something while teaching or during a time that they are busy the teacher helper will get it
2 Substitute - if a student is a helper and they are absent then the sub will take over that position for that day
Beginning the class:
Students will enter the class quietly and respectfully.
Upon entering the classroom the students will put their folders into the basket beside the teacher’s desk and their backpack on their named hangers.
After the students put away their things, the students will make their lunch choices on the lunch board and pick up morning work from the chair beside the lunch board. Students will work on a review worksheet from past material and must be checked off before going into reading time.
Teacher will gain students attention by shaking the egg. Upon hearing the egg the students will then stop what they are doing, stand up, have their eyes on the teacher and their mouths are closed.
When a student is tardy, they are to come into the classroom, place their tardy note on the teacher’s desk, retrieve missed work from the “while you were out” box and begin putting their folder and missed work in the basket bedside the teacher’s desk (this work is to be completed at home and returned to school). They are to then put their backpack on the hanger. Upon completion of these tasks they will join the class in the activity or lesson that the class is doing with no interruption.
Managing the classroom:
Students may not leave their seats during instructional time, unless it is an emergency. If a student does need to leave their seat they are to quietly stand up beside their chair and raise their hand. This indicates that a student needs something fast instead of just needing help with work.
If a student needs to leave the room, they are to follow procedure for leaving their seats and ask the teacher to go where they need to go.
Students who need help with work are not to shout out for the teacher or come up to the teacher. They are to remain seated and raise their hand with their mouths closed.
Students will gain permission to talk by raising their hands.
Instructional materials will be handed out by student helpers who are chosen by the teacher.
Pencils that need to be sharpened will be placed in a no box and a pencil should be retrieved from the yes box. The pencils will be sharpened during center time, by the student helper designated by the teacher.
Students will move into group quietly and only when instructed to do so by the teacher.
When there is work in front of the student it is quiet time. When a student is working in groups they may talk quietly, and during center time they may talking at a normal level voice.
Paper work:
Students will turn in papers into the table captain of the week and they will turn in the papers to the box on the side on teacher’s desk. During other work times, the teacher will grade and hand back papers to students to be filed away in cubbies.
Students will turn in make-up work to a folder marked make-up work underneath the turn in box. Procedures for grading and filing are the same as above.
The teacher will select multiple student helpers for the week and the ones that are designated to hand out papers will hand out papers upon being prompted.
Students who miss quizzes or tests will be required to take the test or quiz the day they return. They will be taken out during an activity (like morning work, centers, specials, or recess) to another teacher’s class or the library to complete the quiz or test.
If a student turns in a late assignment without an excuse for their absence or it is just late, the student will get an automatic 5 points off and will lose 5 points per day until the assignment is turned in or they receive a zero. If the student has an excuse for their absence then the assignment will be due the day they return to school.
Dismissal from class or school:
Student will be dismissed by tables to go to lunch, recess, and specials as seen fit by the teacher. They are to walk quietly from the tables to the line. When students are dismissed from school, the teacher will line them up so that bus riders go first from the first bus to the last and car riders will be last in line.
Dismissal will be permitted only when materials are put away, area around the desks are clean, and all take home materials are put away.
Emergency drills will be handled in a quiet and organized way. Student will be prompted to put down everything they are doing. The table closest to the door will line up first then the table next to them and so on until everyone is in line. We will then leave the classroom and the last person out will check to room to make sure no one is left behind.
Student will only be allowed/made to stay after class with parent approval and because that student either needs help or acted out in class in such a way that their work was not completed.
Course work:
Assignment due dates for projects and major assignments will be posted to the bulletin board in the front of the classroom.
Students will be given a guidelines worksheet for what is expected upon receiving the assignment.
